Hurricane Dolly swept through Laredo last Thursday, and it brought down power at the location where the Texas Ubuntu site was hosted. The power outage out-lasted the power backup system, and consequently the server lost power. The server went down in the middle of the backup routine, resulting in broken file allocation handles on the file system and broken tables on MySQL. We rebuilt the server over the weekend and migrated it to a different location that is more fault-tolerant. That of course necessitated changing the static IP addresses in various places in the server and repointing the DNS records to the new IP address.

I learned a lot about disaster recovery and prevention. I should probably write a piece about the experience. 

In the meantime, I apologize for any inconvenience that the outage may have caused.
